When you want to make cabinets, you are usually short of hands.
You have to hold two boards, put the screw in the right position, and also operate your drill.

That’s why I made these corner clamps.
They are easily adjustable, easy to use for any thickness of wood, and I always have my hands free.

Set, clamp, and go!

With these corner clamps, it’s as easy as that.

Just set the thickness of the sheets you want to connect, place the sheets in the right position, clamp, and you can connect them together.
You don’t have to hold the sheets anymore, and the connection is always perfect.

When the connection is made, you can remove the clamps in a few seconds.

What do you need to make corner clamps?

To prepare you for building these corner clamps, I have made a few handy lists.

In addition to a few personal protective equipments that I use*, I also list the materials as well as the (power) tools you will need to build these corner clamps.

After watching the video, you can continue reading the step-by-step guide to making these corner clamps yourself.

Building these Corner clamps step by step

Now that we have gone through the list of what we all need for this project, I will explain step by step how I made these corner clamps.

Collect your materials and find the best wood.

Let’s build this clamp!

Step 1 | Preparation

Saw all parts as indicated on the plans that you can download in this blog.

To cut the pieces safely and quickly I used my crosscut sled. Be sure to watch the video of how I made my crosscut sled to get some inspiration.

Step 2 | Making a slot

To keep the wedges in place I made a slot in the base of the corner clamps.

To make the slot, adjust the height of the saw blade to the depth you want to make the slot.
With the crosscut sled, you can easily slide the base plate over the saw blade to make a flat slot.

Afterward, you can finish the slot with the chisel and sandpaper if necessary.

Tip:

If you want to know more about how to determine the right sandpaper for your project, be sure to check out my blog: The perfect sandpaper grit guide for woodworking.

Everything you need to know about sandpaper can be found in this article. It will no doubt give you a better understanding of the proper use of sandpaper.

There is also a FREE downloadable guide available to help you determine the right sandpaper grit.

Highly recommended!

Step 3 | Placing the center bolt

To be able to move the adjustable part up and down and to fix it, you can use a bolt that is fixed on the bottom plate.

Later in this blog, I will show you how to make the button to fix the movable part when adjusting the clamp.

Drill a hole at the specified distance as on the plans. Use a drill with a diameter equal to the diameter of the bolt.

After drilling, make the hole at the bottom of the plate larger so that the head of the bolt fits perfectly.

Do this by marking the head of the bolt with a pencil and carefully chisel out the hole.

Step 4 | Adjustable part

Now you can make the adjustable part of this clamp.

First, drill the holes at the indicated points as shown on the plan.

After drilling the holes, cut the slot with the jigsaw by cutting from one drill hole to the other.

After cutting, trim the slot with a file so that it has the same width everywhere.

Step 5 | Wedges

Now make the wedges.

I made these wedges by combining my miter saw with my crosscut sled. That way I didn’t have to reset the angle of the miter saw all the time.

Check the plans for the correct size of the wedges.

You can now use the wedges as pairs on the clamp. The wedge that is flush with the outer edge of the corner clamps needs to be secured with wood glue and brad nails.

If you do not have a nailgun, you can use regular nails for this.

Look carefully in which direction you should place the wedges. If these are not placed correctly, you may experience difficulties when working with the corner clamps.

Step 6 | Securing the wedges

To prevent the wedges from falling out of the corner clamps, especially when you use the corner clamps upside down, you will need to attach a cover plate above the wedges.

For this, you can use 6mm thick plywood. Secure this plywood with wood glue and brad nails.

Step 7 | Making a knob

To fix the adjustable plate when setting it up, you can use a regular nut or a knob that you can buy ready-made.

Because I built a star button jig on my drill press a while ago, I made this knob myself.

To be able to screw the knob onto the bolt, I placed a T-nut in the knob by gently pressing it into the knob with the vice.

Tip:

If you want to see how I built this star knob jig and if you want to see a demonstration you can check out this video I made a while ago: Star knob jig for the drill press.

Step 8 | Assembling the Corner clamps

The clamp is now ready.
All you have to do is slide the wedges into place and turn the knob on the bolt.

To make all edges nicely flush, I placed the clamp on the crosscut sled and slid it along the saw blade. That way I got a nicely finished clamp.
